One-Time Lead Packs or a Monthly Subscription: Which Fits Your Team's Capacity?

Most small and mid-sized teams that feel let down by a purchased lead list did not buy bad data. They bought more contacts than they could contact. The choice between a one-time pack, a recurring subscription and a custom list is therefore not really a pricing question — it is a capacity question.

Here is how we suggest working through it before you order anything.

Step 1: Measure your real follow-up capacity

Count the number of new contacts your team can genuinely reach this week, including a first touch and at least one or two follow-ups. Then multiply by four to get a monthly figure.

A fictional example to show the arithmetic: a two-person sales team where each rep can handle 25 new contacts a week (a mix of short personalised emails and calls) can work roughly 50 new contacts per week, or about 200 per month. For that team, a 1,000-contact file is a five-month backlog, not a monthly plan. Nothing is wrong with the file — the pace simply does not match.

What a one-time lead pack is good for

A one-time pack is a single delivery of contacts that you work at your own rhythm. It tends to fit when:

  • You are testing a new segment, industry or geography and want evidence before committing further.
  • You have a defined campaign window — a launch, an event follow-up, a seasonal push.
  • Budget has to be approved case by case rather than as a recurring line.
  • Your capacity fluctuates, so a fixed monthly volume would sometimes go unused.

Our current one-time options are the Starter Pack – 100 Leads, the Growth Pack – 500 Leads and the Scale Pack – 1000 Leads.

The tradeoff: a static file ages. People change roles, companies change domains, and a list you bought months ago will be less accurate today than the day it arrived. You also carry the whole follow-up rhythm yourself, with no recurring commitment either way.

What a monthly subscription is good for

A monthly subscription delivers a fresh batch of contacts on a repeating basis. It fits when:

  • You want a steady, predictable flow into the pipeline rather than a spike.
  • You already have a working cadence: a defined ICP, message templates, a CRM and someone who owns the follow-up.
  • You can realistically work the volume every month.

Our monthly plans are the Starter Subscription Plan (200 leads), the Growth Plan (500 leads) and the Pro Plan (1000 leads).

The tradeoff is the mirror image of a pack: a recurring commitment only pays off if the volume actually gets worked. Contacts that sit untouched in a spreadsheet do not build pipeline, and a subscription you cannot keep up with is a signal to step down a tier, not to hire faster than your revenue allows.

When to ask for a custom list quote

If your ideal customer profile does not match a standard package — a narrow industry, a specific seniority mix, a particular geography, or extra fields your CRM needs — a custom list is usually the better route. Our Custom Lead List is quotation-based: you share your criteria and receive a quote for the work. A quotation item is not a free product, and the scope is agreed before anything is compiled.

A simple decision rule

  1. Under roughly 200 new contacts of monthly capacity and a one-off goal → a one-time pack.
  2. Steady capacity every month and a repeatable process → a monthly subscription.
  3. Criteria that no standard package covers → a custom list quote.
  4. Unsure → start with the smallest option that covers about one month of capacity, then scale once the follow-up process holds.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • Which fields are included, and in what format — CSV or Excel?
  • How is the list segmented: industry, company size, business role, geography?
  • How are duplicates handled within the file?
  • What was checked, and when? Verification typically covers things like address format, domain and mailbox checks. It is a quality signal, not a promise: a verified email can still bounce, be ignored, or reach someone who is not the buyer.
  • What happens after delivery if something looks wrong? Ask before you order, not after.

Plan the follow-up before the file arrives

The file is the easy part. Before you buy, write the first message and the two follow-ups that come after it, decide who sends them, and agree how replies are logged. Keep outreach permission-aware, include a clear opt-out in every message, and honour it immediately. Map the file's columns to your CRM fields before import, and keep the source and the date on every record so a colleague can tell where a contact came from.

Next step

Browse the current packages and subscriptions on our store page — SmartLeads on vcity — and if your criteria do not fit a standard option, ask us for a custom list quote. We are happy to help you match the volume to the capacity you actually have.
