The "Capitán Miranda" is a sailing ship of the National Navy of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay. Originally, it served as a hydrographic ship for oceanographic research and the preparation of nautical charts, before becoming a training ship in 1977.

Walking through the beautiful port of Fredrikstad in Norway, and admiring the sailboats participating in the Tall Ships Races, it was impossible not to be captivated by this ship, which displays the sun emblem of the renowned and award-winning plastic artist Carlos Páez Vilaró on its sails.

It stood out for its originality and color. Remembering these beautiful characteristics, I decided to capture the symbols, drawings, and colors on the sails of a different sailboat, one that evokes a feeling of nostalgia and longing for a rather dreamlike past—a ship imagined sailing the Baltic Sea while the sunset paints the waves.

Maria Jimena Navarro

María Jimena Navarro is a Chilean painter, holding a Bachelor's degree in Plastic Arts from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. She was a distinguished student of renowned Chilean artists such as Hernán Miranda, Gonzalo Cienfuegos, and Roser Bru.

Her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, both in Chile and abroad, including Guatemala, the United States, and Costa Rica, where she has lived with her family since 2015.

With a distinctly Expressionist style, incorporating color to varying degrees, she has dedicated herself to capturing everyday life in a figurative manner, exploring themes that hold personal significance in both imagery and emotional weight. These themes include urban landscapes, the human figure, and the depiction of horses—portrayed as objects in constant motion, expressing their strength and imbued with vibrant color.

María Jimena’s painting is an invitation to pause and feel, to remember, or to let ourselves be carried away. It is a tribute to life, reminding us that, ultimately, life is lived in color.

In 2022, she ventured into professional writing for the first time, participating in the "César Vidal Christian Novel Award" by The Agustin Agency with her work "Colombina y la Sonrisa de Dios" (Colombina and the Smile of God).
