The "Gammel Sjømann," which translates to "old fisherman," paid no attention to us as we tried to catch mackerel aboard the "Manabique."
"What is the name of that sailboat?" I asked the captain, a Norwegian, curiously. "That's the Gammel Sjømann," he replied, more focused on navigating than on observing the sailboat.
"I want one like that," I thought, and I knew I would have it, even if only on paper and in Indian ink.
Though not huge, it was majestic and imposing as it cut through the northern sea, leaving a white trail behind it.
With this drawing, I discovered blue ink, which when mixed with white ink creates different shades of blue, from cobalt to ultramarine, and of course, light blue. It is a fairly loose drawing, with thick lines, but agile, fast, and daring like the sailboat itself.
If I had to name the feeling this drawing conveyed to me while tracing it with pen and inkwell, I would define it as freedom.
Going a bit further, if you ask me what I think about now when I see it, I would say it evokes not only freedom but also solitude and independence.

María Jimena Navarro is a Chilean painter, holding a Bachelor's degree in Plastic Arts from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. She was a distinguished student of renowned Chilean artists such as Hernán Miranda, Gonzalo Cienfuegos, and Roser Bru.
Her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, both in Chile and abroad, including Guatemala, the United States, and Costa Rica, where she has lived with her family since 2015.
With a distinctly Expressionist style, incorporating color to varying degrees, she has dedicated herself to capturing everyday life in a figurative manner, exploring themes that hold personal significance in both imagery and emotional weight. These themes include urban landscapes, the human figure, and the depiction of horses—portrayed as objects in constant motion, expressing their strength and imbued with vibrant color.
María Jimena’s painting is an invitation to pause and feel, to remember, or to let ourselves be carried away. It is a tribute to life, reminding us that, ultimately, life is lived in color.
In 2022, she ventured into professional writing for the first time, participating in the "César Vidal Christian Novel Award" by The Agustin Agency with her work "Colombina y la Sonrisa de Dios" (Colombina and the Smile of God).
