“Botes en Gamlebyen”

簡介

"Navegantes: Inspirado en The Tall Ships Races en aguas escandinavas"

Título: “Botes en Gamlebyen”

Técnica: Acrylic and oil on canvas

Dimensiones: 100 x 100 cms

Gamlebyen, the old town of Fredrikstad, is Scandinavia's best-preserved fortified town. The Fredrikstad fortress features wide water-filled moats and earthen walls. On the east side of the fortress, facing away from the river, are three bastions and two counterscarps, ideal locations for cannons.

The fortifications along the riverfront consist of an impressive stone wall reinforced by embankments.

Walking through Gamlebyen is a captivating experience. The old wooden houses, cobblestone streets, and charming antique shops create a wonderful atmosphere.

Crossing the ferry to reach this town allowed me to admire the old ships in the shipyard. Rustic wooden sailboats, anchors, smaller vessels—all of them colorful and inspiring.

These vibrant boats sparked an urgent need in me to capture them on canvas, exchanging the bright blue sky of that day for a stormy, threatening one that would enhance the colors of these delicate boats. The strength of the drawing contends with the painting, a characteristic present in many of my works, seeking the delicate balance upon which harmony rests.

This trip provided another memorable experience, filling my eyes with incredible images that transformed into unforgettable memories.

Maria Jimena Navarro

María Jimena Navarro is a Chilean painter, holding a Bachelor's degree in Plastic Arts from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. She was a distinguished student of renowned Chilean artists such as Hernán Miranda, Gonzalo Cienfuegos, and Roser Bru.

Her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, both in Chile and abroad, including Guatemala, the United States, and Costa Rica, where she has lived with her family since 2015.

With a distinctly Expressionist style, incorporating color to varying degrees, she has dedicated herself to capturing everyday life in a figurative manner, exploring themes that hold personal significance in both imagery and emotional weight. These themes include urban landscapes, the human figure, and the depiction of horses—portrayed as objects in constant motion, expressing their strength and imbued with vibrant color.

María Jimena’s painting is an invitation to pause and feel, to remember, or to let ourselves be carried away. It is a tribute to life, reminding us that, ultimately, life is lived in color.

In 2022, she ventured into professional writing for the first time, participating in the "César Vidal Christian Novel Award" by The Agustin Agency with her work "Colombina y la Sonrisa de Dios" (Colombina and the Smile of God).
