El "Gammel Sjømann", que traducido significa "viejo pescador", no nos prestaba la menor atención mientras intentábamos pescar macarelas a bordo del "Manabique".
¿Cómo se llama ese velero? le pregunté con curiosidad al capitán, noruego. Ese es el Gammel Sjømann, contestó, más ocupado en navegar que en observarlo.
Yo quiero uno así, pensé, y supe que lo tendría, aunque fuera en papel y tinta china.
Sin ser enorme, resultaba majestuoso e imponente mientras cortaba, a su paso, un trazo del mar del norte dejando una estela blanca tras de si.
Con este dibujo descubrí la tinta azul, que al mezclarse con tinta blanca genera diferentes tonos de azul, desde el cobalto hasta el ultramar y por supuesto, el celeste. Es un dibujo bastante suelto, de líneas gruesas, por supuesto, pero ágiles, rápidas y atrevidas como el velero en sí.
Si tuviera que ponerle nombre al sentimiento que me transmitió este dibujo mientras lo trazaba con la plumilla y el tintero, lo definiría como libertad.
Y yendo un poco más lejos, si me preguntan en que pienso ahora, cuando lo veo, diría que pienso no sólo en libertad, sino también en soledad e independencia.

María Jimena Navarro is a Chilean painter, holding a Bachelor's degree in Plastic Arts from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. She was a distinguished student of renowned Chilean artists such as Hernán Miranda, Gonzalo Cienfuegos, and Roser Bru.
Her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, both in Chile and abroad, including Guatemala, the United States, and Costa Rica, where she has lived with her family since 2015.
With a distinctly Expressionist style, incorporating color to varying degrees, she has dedicated herself to capturing everyday life in a figurative manner, exploring themes that hold personal significance in both imagery and emotional weight. These themes include urban landscapes, the human figure, and the depiction of horses—portrayed as objects in constant motion, expressing their strength and imbued with vibrant color.
María Jimena’s painting is an invitation to pause and feel, to remember, or to let ourselves be carried away. It is a tribute to life, reminding us that, ultimately, life is lived in color.
In 2022, she ventured into professional writing for the first time, participating in the "César Vidal Christian Novel Award" by The Agustin Agency with her work "Colombina y la Sonrisa de Dios" (Colombina and the Smile of God).
